The correct OG image size is 1200×630 pixels. That is an aspect ratio of 1.91:1. Save the image as PNG or JPEG and keep the file below 1 MB.
One image at this size works on X, Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, and iMessage. You do not need a different file for each platform.

Why 1200×630?
Facebook set 1.91:1 as the ratio of its link preview, and the other platforms copied it. Previews are displayed at about 500 to 600 pixels wide. At 1200 pixels, the image has two pixels for each displayed pixel, so it stays sharp on high-density screens.
A larger image, such as 2400×1260, gives no visible gain. It only makes the file heavier and the preview slower.
The safe zone
Some apps crop the image. Small previews on X, WhatsApp, and iMessage can show only the center square.
- Keep text and logos at least 60 pixels from each edge.
- Put the most important content in the center 630×630 square.
- Do not put a logo in a corner if the card must work as a square.
File format and file size
- PNG for text, flat color, and screenshots.
- JPEG for photos.
- Do not use SVG. Platforms do not render it.
- Be careful with WebP and AVIF. Not all platforms read them. PNG and JPEG work everywhere.
- Keep the file below 1 MB. Crawlers have short timeouts, and a slow image is shown as no image.
Tell the platform the size
Add the width and height as tags. The platform can then draw the preview at the correct size on the first share, before it has downloaded the file.

- A square logo as og:image. The platform shows a small thumbnail or crops the logo.
- An image below 600 pixels wide. You get the small layout, not the large card.
- A 16:9 screenshot. 1920×1080 is 1.78:1. The top and the bottom are cut off.
- Text at the edges. It is cut off in square crops.
- A 4 MB photo. It is below the limit, but many previews time out before it loads.
