og:type tells a platform what kind of thing your page is: a website, an article, a video, a profile. For most pages the answer is one of two values.

The link preview looks the same. Set the tag anyway. It is one of the four tags that the protocol requires, and article unlocks the date and author tags below.

With og:type set to article, you can add these tags. Some platforms show the date and the author in the preview.

product is not in the core Open Graph protocol. Facebook and Pinterest read it as an extension, with tags such as product:price:amount and product:price:currency. If you run a shop, use product on product pages. All other platforms treat it as website.
